SPA480.30 Regional Geography of the World (Geografía Regional del Mundo)

The course introduces the student to the study of human geography, making emphasis in the understanding and valuation of the elements and factors that explain the activity of the man like a modifier of the Earth’s surface, in their economic, political and social dimensions. To relate the natural geographic spaces of the Earth to its human and economic resources, distinguishing the developed from the developing regions. To learn about the most outstanding physical geographic elements in the globe. Analyze population from a quantitative point of view in the most significant regions of the continents. El curso introduce al estudiante al estudio de la geografía humana, subrayando la comprensión y valoración de los elementos y factores que explican la actividad del ser humano como modificador de la superficie del planeta en sus dimensiones económicas, políticas y sociales. También se intenta relacionar los espacios geográficos de la tierra con sus recursos humanos y económicos, diferenciando las regiones desarrolladas de las que están en proceso de desarrollo. Se presentarán los elementos geográficos físicos mas sobresalientes del mundo. Se analiza la población de las regiones más significativas de los continentes desde un punto de vista cuantitativo. This course will provide students with an overview of the principal tensions in Chilean socio-political history during the 20th century. Students will be familiar with the primary historical interpretations of this era. Students will analyze the electoral system, the amplification of democratic participation, social mobility, and lower society representation leading up to the coup d’état of 1973.

The course provides a theoretical framework for the study of the environment and sustainable development. It also provides methodological tools for the integrated study of the environment and sustainable development (e.g. environmental inventory, ecological planning, territorial indicators of sustainability, human development index, pressure-state-response indicator, and etcetera.) This course presents the variety of trends and theoretical discourses that emerged in the visual arts since 1960. The objective of the course is to provide an understanding of artistic manifestations within their political and historical contexts. The course gives priority to the aesthetic and conceptual proposals around each “plastic” moment in order to challenge the discourse around Chilean arts in the last decades. Students analyze critiques and their relationship with the practice of art. The program is complemented with audiovisual materials and guest speakers (e.g. visual artists and art theoreticians). El curso presenta la variedad de tendencias y discursos teóricos que han surgido alrededor de las artes visuales desde 1960. El objetivo es prestar una comprensión de las manifestaciones artísticas dentro de su contexto político e histórico. El curso da prioridad a las propuestas estéticas y conceptuales en torno a cada momento “plástico” para desde allí cuestionar el discurso acerca del arte chileno de las últimas décadas. Los estudiantes analizarán las críticas y su relación con la practica del arte. El programa se complementa con materiales audiovisuales y charlas de artistas y teóricos que serán invitados. The course explores the artistic manifestations of indigenous Chileans. It seeks to develop an appreciation for the relationship between arts and the particular worldview of diverse indigenous cultures (e.g. Arica, Diaguita and Mapuche as well as their symbolic character. El curso explora las manifestaciones artísticas de los indígenas chilenos. Intenta desarrollar la apreciación de la relación que existe entre las artes y la cosmovisión de diversas culturas indígenas (e.g., Arica, Diaguita y Mapuche) como también su carácter simbólico. This course evaluates the relationship between the mass media and the arts from aesthetic, philosophical, and historical perspectives. Students will also research particular problems in the field of Latin American and Chilean artistic development, using as a framework the rise, development, and continental consolidation of diverse mass communication media and systems during the 20th century. El curso discute la relación entre los medios de comunicación y las artes desde puntos de vista estéticos, filosóficos e históricos. Los estudiantes investigarán también problemas particulares en el área del desarrollo artístico de Chile, usando como marco la aparición, desarrollo y consolidación continental de varios medios y sistemas de comunicación en el siglo XX. El curso se adentra en la lógica del funcionamiento de las culturas y la cosmovisión propios de los pueblos indígenas chilenos, su permanencia a través de la historia y sus relaciones con el mundo no indígena. Se sintetizarán las características del mundo indígena chileno, desde sus orígenes hasta el presente, a través de un análisis basado en la antropología y la etnografía y se valorizará la diversidad étnica y cultural de los diversos pueblos que componen ese mundo. The course seeks to understand the logic behind the functioning of the characteristic cultures and world-view of Chilean indigenous peoples, as well as their permanence throughout history and their relationship with the non-indigenous world. The study synthesizes the main characteristics of Chile’s indigenous world, from its origins to the present, through the lens of anthropological and ethnographic sources, and evaluates the ethnic and cultural diversity of the different people that comprise it.

Estudio de la geografía chilena en sus aspectos físicos, humanos y económicos. Incluye el estudio de los siguientes temas: localización planetaria de Chile; características de sus espacios terrestre, marítimo, y aéreo; distribución espacial de la población chilena; organización regional; y las regiones naturales de Chile. This course, the study of the geography of Chile, in its physical, human, and economic aspects will include such topics as: Chile’s location South America and the world; terrestrial, maritime, and aerial spaces; distribution of the population; regional organization; and natural regions.

Designed for all students, Cinema as Art’s objective is to communicate the limitless capacities of film and to garner an understanding of cinema as an art form. This course is classroom and web based. It offers a historical and critical revision of the main cinematographic schools, such as the French, Soviet, German, and American schools.

This course provides the theoretical framework for the analysis of the history of contemporary art. Students will study paradigmatic aspects of contemporary art according to various voices and perspectives from within the art community. This course will equip students with theoretical tools which can be applied to future post-graduate work.
