Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. Course objectives include: to analyze the formation of Hispanic society from the beginning of a growing process of mixing and adapting from European customs to those of the American world; to analytically reconstruct the process of disciplining and integrating into the popular castes to the production models of colonial America; to study the reaction of the castes to the process of monarchical conformation.

Estudio de la geografía chilena en sus aspectos físicos, humanos y económicos. Incluye el estudio de los siguientes temas: localización planetaria de Chile; características de sus espacios terrestre, marítimo, y aéreo; distribución espacial de la población chilena; organización regional; y las regiones naturales de Chile. This course, the study of the geography of Chile, in its physical, human, and economic aspects will include such topics as: Chile?s location South America and the world; terrestrial, maritime, and aerial spaces; distribution of the population; regional organization; and natural regions.

LAS380.21 Cinema as Art (FG0029 El Arte del Cine)

Curso de formación general destinado a los estudiantes de todas las facultades de la Universidad de Chile, con el proposito de incentivar la comprensión del cine como una forma de arte. El curso se desarrolla bajo una modalidad presencial mas un apoyo por medio de la pagina web. Proporciona una mirada histórica y critica sobre las principales escuelas cinematograficas, tales como francesa, la soviética, la alemana y la norteamericana. Designed for all students, Cinema as Art’s objective is to communicate the limitless capacities of film and to garner an understanding of cinema as an art form. This course is classroom and web based. It offers a historical and critical revision of the main cinematographic schools, such as the French, Soviet, German, and American schools.

LAS380.20 Contemporary Chilean Art (Arte Contemporáneo ATH002)

This course provides the theoretical framework for the analysis of the history of contemporary art. Students will study paradigmatic aspects of contemporary art according to various voices and perspectives from within the art community. This course will equip students with theoretical tools which can be applied to future post-graduate work.

LAS380.2 18th Century Chilean History and the Independence Revolution

Estudio de las transformaciones sociales, políticas y económicas que experimentó el Reyno de Chile durante el siglo XVIII: contexto imperial, crisis colonial, independencia y consolidación del orden oligárquico. Engaging in the study of the social, political, and economic transformations that occurred during the Realm of Chile in the 18th Century, this course will look at imperial context, colonial crisis, independence, and consolidation of an oligarchic order.

LAS380.19 Chilean Art 2 (ATH002 Arte Chileno II)

La síntesis del arte aborigen y el europeo, llamado Arte Colonial, concita el interés de académicos y críticos como una manifestación artística nacional en continua evolución. El objetivo central del curso es lograr un conocimiento cabal de las expresiones artísticas locales en el ámbito de la pintura, escultura, artesanía y arquitectura en su desarrollo cronológico y estilístico. The synthesis of aboriginal and European art, called Colonial Art, merits the interest of scholars and critics as a continuously developing national art form. The main objective of this course is to achieve complete knowledge of painting, sculpture, artisan work, and architectue, and their chronological and stylistic development in Chile.

LAS380.18 Chilean Art 1 (ATH 001 Arte Chileno I)

El objetivo del curso es entregar a los alumnos un conocimiento cabal de las expresiones pictóricas, escultóricas, y arquitectónicas manifestadas en el ámbito local en el devenir histórico chileno. Al término del curso los alumnos deberán haber desarrollado un sentido crítico para analizar las diversas manifestaciones plásticas. The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the pictorial, sculptural and architectural expressions manifested in the historical development of Chile. Students will develop their critical skills and be able to analyze diverse artistic manifestations.

LAS380.17 Contemporary Hispano-American Literature

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. The development of Hispano-American literature during the contemporary period, from its beginnings in the early decades of the 20th century to the present. We study a significant number of representative works in the genres of narrative, poetry and essay, with an emphasis on the decades of the 1950?s, 60?s and 70?s.

LAS380.11 History of Chilean Theater (ATT001 Historía del Teatro Chileno)

Asignatura teórica destinada a interesar al alumno en el conocimiento de los diversos elementos constituyentes del teatro chileno y su relación directa con los movimientos sociales y políticos del siglo XX. Ofrece una visión global de algunos dramaturgos y movimientos escénicos nacionales, a partir del nacimiento de los teatros universitarios. This theoretical course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of Chilean theater and its direct relationship with social and political movements of the second half of the 20th century. It offers a global vision of some dramatists and national stage movements. Students will learn representative works of the period and study the evolution of the Chilean theater, from the birth of university theaters through its critical eras.
