GEO380.10 Urban Geography (Geografía urbana)

This course is an introductory study of the urban problem, from the point of view of geography. Topics include: spatial and temporal connotations of a city, urbanization and historical evolution of the cities, the formation of cities in Spain, Chile, and colonial Latin America, migration and city growth, urban geography, contemporary problems. El curso es una introducción al estudio del problema urbano desde el punto de vista geográfico. Los temas incluyen: las connotaciones espaciales y temporales de una ciudad, la urbanización y evolución histórica de las ciudades, la formación de las ciudades de España, Chile y de la Latinoamérica colonial, la migración y el auge de la ciudad, la geografía urbana, y los problemas contemporáneos. GEO380.1 Geography of Chile (SH20515 Geografía de Chile)

Estudio de la geografía chilena en sus aspectos físicos, humanos y económicos. Incluye el estudio de los siguientes temas: localización planetaria de Chile; características de sus espacios terrestre, marítimo, y aéreo; distribución espacial de la población chilena; organización regional; y las regiones naturales de Chile. This course, the study of the geography of Chile, in its physical, human, and economic aspects will include such topics as: Chile’s location in South America and the world; terrestrial, maritime, and aerial spaces; distribution of the population; regional organization; and natural regions.

FLL380.1 Politics and Literature

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. The aim of this course is to identify the roles of allusion in literature in the construction of ideas of Max Weber, Carl Schmitt and Hannah Arendt. Regarding Weber, students will study the allusions of Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Shakespeare and in the case of Schmitt and Arendt, the allusions both made to Herman Melville. Students will identify the argument structure of the approach of Weber, Schmitt and Arendt and then identify how these authors use passages from literary works to express their personal views.

FLL180.1 Mapuche Language and Culture (Lengua y Cultura Mapuche)

Taught in Spanish/Mapuche at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester.  This is an immersion course in the Mapuche language and culture, of basic level, designed for students of different careers who have no language skills in Mapudungun. It is based on a communicative, intercultural and functional approach. At the end of the course, participants will demonstrate basic communication skills of the language. (LET075E)

Taught in Spanish at Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester.  Designed for all students, Cinema as Art’s objective is to communicate the limitless capacities of film and to garner an understanding of cinema as an art form. This course is classroom- and web-based. It offers a historical and critical revision of the main cinematographic schools, such as the French, Soviet, German, and American schools.

The content will be addressed within three modules: “Evaluation and development of opportunities”, in which we will explore which features of business and industries create opportunities for the entrepreneur; “Secure Resources” in which we will examine crucial factors for a successful business enterprise; “Growth and Maintenance of a Company” where we will look at the evolution of a business strategy. ECS380.2 Fundamentals of Biotechnology – Fundamentos de Biotecnología

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course offers students an overview of the different aspects of biotechnology: its history, definitions, projections and real-world applications. However, biotechnology is also a double-edged sword for its ability to modify and alter the course of nature, posing potential risks and ethical dilemmas. Therefore, given the importance of these issues, the course is also interactive, as we debate and discuss topics related to bioethics. (IIQ 2663)
