Berta Agudo graduated in modern languages and literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She was working on teaching various languages (English, Italian, French, and Spanish) but in the end decided to specialize in Spanish as a foreign fanguage, teaching Spanish in Italy. She obtained a master’s degree in Spanish as a second language at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. 

Ever since she finished her studies, she has been collaborating with different institutions, such as Middlebury College in Spain, Southern Methodist University (SMU), Chapman University, ESCP Business School, and, lastly, Syracuse University.

She enjoys sharing her culture and learning from her students, which she does every day.

She has spent over two decades reporting from China, Belgium, India, Japan, Spain, and Indonesia, contributing to top international publications like The New York Times, Granta, The Monocle, Nikkei Asian Review, the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Hindu, and The Times of India. She is the author of eight books, including two novels. Pallavi is also adjunct professor in the Media and Communications Department at IE University in Madrid, Spain.

Montserrat Alonso

Montserrat Alonso holds a degree in Hispanic philology from the University of Alcalá de Henares, and she completed a master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, presenting a thesis titled “Spanish for Tourism: A Proposal for a Task-Based Didactic Unit.” Also, she has a master’s degree in Latin American literature from the University of Maryland, USA.

She worked as a Spanish professor in different universities: University of Maryland, Alabama University, NYU, USAC, Alcalingua and Menéndez Pelayo. She also teaches the module “Spanish for Specific Purposes” in the master’s program for updating and training of teaching Spanish as a foreign language at the University of Valencia.

Montserrat is the author of the Spanish method “Embarque ELE” for levels 1, 2, 3, and 4, published by Edelsa Publishing.

Prof. Alfonso Blázquez

Prof. Alfonso Blázquez earned a Ph.D. in genetics and cell biology and licenciatura in biology at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). His postdoctoral research has mainly been in the fields of redox control of cell functions, photodynamic therapy, applied biophysics, and genotoxicity. He has been teaching genetics, cell biology, microscopy, and embryology courses for more than 10 years at undergraduate and graduate levels. He enjoyed a postdoctoral position at Aarhus University (Denmark) for three years. At present, he is an assistant professor at the UAM. His current research interests are in genotoxicity and genomic instability brought about by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species.

Prof. Miguel Campión Larumbe

With a long career as a Spanish teacher working with students of diverse nationalities, he has authored several instructional materials for teaching Spanish, published by renowned companies such as Pearson, Wiley, and EF. In his efforts to promote the Spanish language, he published a work in 2002 focused on teaching Spanish as a second language through reading comprehension practice: “Una desaparición misteriosa” (Edinumen).

In addition to his teaching activities, he has concentrated his research on Spanish Golden Age literature, with a particular emphasis on literary collaboration and the application of digital humanities to its study. His doctoral thesis (2022) involved a critical edition and study of the two versions of the play El mejor amigo, el muerto. Continuing his research on this play, he has published articles on the collaborative methods of playwrights in multi-author works.

Prof. Carmona received a Ph.D. from UCLA (20th century Spanish literature, literary theory and cultural studies) and taught Spanish language, literature and cinema at American universities such as USC, Smith College, and LSU before returning to Spain. He has also worked as a journalist for EFE (Spanish News Agency) in South and Central America. As a translator, he has published several books on film and literary theory. In Madrid, he teaches Spanish language, Spanish literature and film at USC and Syracuse University. He is currently working on the script for several TV documentaries on cultural issues.

Prof. José Miguel Fernández Dols

Prof. Fernández Dols is a full professor of psychology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and has taught many different courses during his academic career. He is particularly interested in four disciplines: social psychology, political psychology, cross-cultural psychology, and emotion. For the last 10 years, Dr. Fernández Dols has taught social psychology and political psychology to European undergraduate students, cross-cultural psychology to U.S. undergraduate students, and emotion to graduate students at universities in both sides of the Atlantic.

Dr. Fernández Dols’ research focuses on facial expression and everyday conceptions of emotion in different cultures. He is also interested in the study of societal problems related to justice, social norms, and moral behavior.

Prof. Enrique García Pérez is an anthropologist specializing in the fields of audiovisual anthropology, research methods, and techniques of applied anthropology.

He currently works as a professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid where he teaches audiovisual research methods & techniques, cultural anthropology of Spain, and introduction to social anthropology for students of tourism & commerce.

In addition to teaching, he works in parallel as a consultant for El Viaje de Walker where he is the Head of Research Design.  He also teaches audiovisual anthropology, is an avid filmmaker, and acts as an accuracy consultant for several different film festivals.

Prof. González has previously worked on several EU projects dealing with border regimes, migration policies, human rights, and gender for different institutions such as ICMPD-International Centre for Migration Policy Development, Eliamep-Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, and CIDOB-Barcelona Centre for International Affairs. Her main research interests include international migration, transnational families, care, emotions, and affect.

Alba Grao

Alba Grao Rico is a dedicated Spanish instructor at Syracuse University in Madrid where she has been teaching since 2017. She holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and education sciences and a master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, and she is a certified DELE examiner.

Alba began her career as a Spanish professor at the Instituto Cervantes and University Suor Orsola Benincasa, both in Naples, where she spent several years. Alba taught Italian at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, Madrid, as well as Spanish for different language schools. She has also worked as a translator, DELE examiner, and with students with special needs in a public center.

Alba aims to teach Spanish not just as a language, but as a gateway to understanding Spanish and European cultures, inspiring her students to develop a deep passion for learning new languages.

Prof. Antonel Jepure

Prof. Jepure has spent over 15 years working on archaeological research focused on assimilation and acculturation in Spain’s late antiquity and Visigothic period in several Spanish universities (UPV–Vitoria, UAH–Alcalá de Henares, UAM–Madrid) and for the Museo de Segovia. His research interests and experience are centered on paleoanthropology, archaeology, early medieval studies, and subaquatic archaeology. He has participated in several excavations in Spain, Germany, and Croatia.

Prof. Jepure is currently involved in research projects in the province of Segovia, in central Spain, and in Biscay, in northern Spain.

The Hemingway course at Syracuse University Madrid is part of a larger research project on the connections between U.S. writers and Europe in the twentieth century. As part of this work, Dr. Kineen presented a paper at the International Hemingway Society’s 2012 Biennial Conference entitled “Out of Place? Hemingway’s Michigan Memories in Death in the Afternoon.

Prof. Marcelino is a creative advertising professional, brand communications specialist, and visual artist. She holds a Ph.D. in advertising, communications, and public relations, as well as a Master’s Degree in strategic advertising and a Bachelor’s Degree in advertising with a specialization in creativity. 

As a brand communications consultant and digital content manager, she has worked with several global brands. Her work has a special focus on social transformation, diversity, equity, and representation, also promoting communications, advertising, and branding studies with an antiracist and anti-stereotypes approach. As a visual artist, she has participated in contemporary art festivals in Spain, Mexico, Cuba, the United States, and the Dominican Republic and as an activist has been part of the team of speakers and press representatives of recognized antiracist organizations in Spain.

Prof. Leticia Martínez

Prof. Martínez has been teaching courses titled “Health Psychology, Wellbeing, and Techniques of Intervention” at IE University and Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She received a Master’s Degree in clinical and health psychology (2014), and she has completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She is interested in new approaches in psychopathology and assessment (such as taxometrical approaches or network analysis), cognitive biases, dimensions of self-esteem, and well-being in psychotic patients. She is also interested in applying experimental methodologies and new technologies (eg, IAT, ESM, APPs …) to the study of psychopathology and the promotion of well-being. Prof. Martínez also works as a clinical practitioner of third-generation therapies (e.g., acceptance and commitment therapies, mindfulness, compassion-focused therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy) and positive psychotherapy.

Prof. Martínez Matute is currently working as an assistant economist for the DG of Economics, Statistics and Research of the Bank of Spain (Eurosystem). She has taught economics for several years, principally microeconomics, principles of economics, accounting and financial economics. Prof. Martínez Matute has collaborated with different institutions such as Georgia State University (US), London School of Economics (UK), Franklin Institute (Spain) and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). Her research interests involve applied economics, labour economics, macroeconomics, and policy evaluation. Prof. Martínez Matute has published various papers in top peer-reviewed academic journals related to the economic analysis of labour markets, judicial systems, insolvency and productivity, credit, and education and skills. She has been teaching economics of the European integration at Syracuse Madrid since 2015.

Andrea de Miguel

Andrea de Miguel is a forensic doctor. She has been teaching psychopathology at Universidad Isabel I. She has also worked as a professor at Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, designing and developing practical workshops about psychological damage in victims of gender-based violence. She has been a mentor for Legal Medicine Interns of Psychiatry.

Currently, she works as a forensic doctor at Madrid Provincial Court issuing psychological and psychiatric reports. She has also worked as an associate professor in the Master’s Degree Program for medical expertise and evaluation of psychological and body damage at AMIR, as an associate professor at the European University of Madrid, and as a professor and mentor for the preparation of legal medicine specialization for the Spanish state.

Mónica Pérez-Bedmar

Mónica Pérez-Bedmar holds a B.S. in biological oceanography and a M.S.Sc. in coastal zone management and is at present pursuing a doctorate in ecology.  She lived in the United States for more than 10 years working in and collaborating with several environmental agencies dedicated to the protection of coastal areas. Mónica has taught oceanography and environmental science in several U.S. university programs in Spain for several years. She conducts field research and field trips with students often and has collaborated with several research projects in the environmental field. In addition, Mónica is a certified diver and sailing instructor and is an avid nature explorer.

Prof. Francisco Javier Rodríguez Chaparro

Prof. Rodríguez Chaparro earned his Ph.D. from New York University in 2019. A former Fulbright scholar, his research interests include museum studies, Spanish painting and graphic arts, art of the Age of Revolution, and the work of Francisco Goya. He has worked in different capacities at institutions such as the MoMA, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He currently serves as an Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies, at IE University.

Prof. Rodríguez del Valle earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in immunoparasitology. She completed her post-doctoral research in the fields of toxicology and pharmacology. She has extensive experience teaching courses in microbiology, cell biology, and microbiology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Prof. Rodríguez del Valle has worked in U.S. universities in Spain and in Mexico. Her interests involve the study of host-parasite relationships, how microbes evade the immune system, and the development of new drugs for microbial control.

Rosa Sánchez de Oña

Rosa Sánchez de Oña holds a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, a degree in translation and interpreting from the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, and an M.A. in teaching Spanish as a foreign language from the Universidad Carlos III. She has worked as both a legal translator for relevant legal firms and as a Spanish language instructor for corporate executives in Germany and France. After having lived abroad for more than 10 years, she knows how important it is to learn not only the language, but also the culture of the host country in order to achieve a rewarding academic experience. She thoroughly enjoys teaching Spanish and working with college-age students.

Prof. Pilar Sánchez Millas

Since 2002, Prof. Sánchez Millas has been teaching history and political science courses at Syracuse Madrid, including numerous field trips to interview politicians involved in the peace process of the Basque Country and its relationship to the Spanish state.

Prof. Sánchez Millas’ Ph.D. dissertation analyzed the period of absolute majorities of the socialist party, dealing specifically with the teamwork built for the Spanish politics towards the European integration process. Her research projects include identifying, classifying, and storing the personal files of a main character in the Spanish transition to democracy, Francisco Fernández Ordóñez, who was an outstanding promoter of opening up the country to the rest of the world after forty years of dictatorship. Prof. Sánchez Millas continues to research and write about people involved in peace, transitions to democracy, and the conciliation politics behind these.

Since 1991, María Teresa Viñuelas has taught Spanish language and linguistics at Syracuse Madrid to undergraduate students at all Spanish levels. She was first a lecturer, and later, the director of the Mare Nostrum Signature Seminar. She has also directed the Roots and Routes and Spanish Identities Signature Seminars for Syracuse Madrid. Since 2005, she has served as supervisor of the Spanish Department and coordinator of internship and service learning.

Óscar Yáñez

Óscar Yáñez is passionate about sports as a social catalyst and changemaker. With over 20 years of experience in sports institutions (sports clubs, associations, and federations), sponsoring companies, consulting firms, and marketing agencies, he focuses on sports digital marketing strategies. He has been a lecturer at many European universities, such as IESE, Universidad Europea, IE University, and the University of Navarra. He is currently Director at www.SportsBizLab.com.

Prof. Amalia Yrizar

History

Prof. Yrizar has taught at the undergraduate university level since 2003, first as a TA at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and later as a lecturer at Syracuse University Madrid. At Syracuse Madrid, she has taught several history and political science courses, including the Imperium and Azahar Signature Seminars.  As of 2008, she collaborates with a graduate program at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

In 2005, Prof. Yrizar became the assistant to the Director for Academic Affairs, and in 2011, she was named Assistant Director of the Syracuse Madrid program.
