LIT301 French Cinema vs. Hollywood (Fall)

For Fall 2024 semester, will be offered as FRE 300.1 and taught in French. Students must meet French language pre-requisite to enroll.

A comparative study of French and American cinema across various themes and genres. The French often speak of l’Exception Culturelle, their tradition of cultural difference and autonomy, and this term is most often invoked in discussions about French cinema. But what is it that makes French cinema distinctive? Why does this industry insist on its difference from Hollywood? To what extent do its movies reveal France’s cultural values and its vision of the world? This course will examine the various dimensions of French cinema and its unique tradition. Film screenings in French with English subtitles.

For Syracuse University students, this course satisfies a Liberal Arts Core requirement for humanities.
