SPA480.52 Contemporary Latin American Cinema (El cine latinoamericano contemporáneo)

The course offers a critical overview of Latin American cinema since the 1960s, trying to identify recurrent themes and discourses that allow the distinction of a cultural identity. The objective of the course is to vindicate cinematographic expression as a way to access particular conceptions of the world that are in force in the Latin American cultural environment. Students will reflect on mythical and religious paradigms as sources of cultural identity in our societies and socio-cultural instability. El curso ofrece un panorama crítico del cine latinoamericano desde 1960, intentando identificar temas y discursos recurrentes que permiten distinguir uno identidad cultural. El objetivo del curso es la vindicación de la expresión cinematográfica como una de las maneras de acceder a visiones particulares del mundo que tienen vigencia en el ambiente cultural latinoamericano. Los estudiantes considerarán paradigmas míticos y religiosos como fuentes de identidad cultural en nuestras sociedades y nuestra inestabilidad sociocultural. SPA480.51 Aesthetics of Iberoamerican Tales (La estética del cuento iberoamericano)

This course provides an integral vision of the short story genre in Spain and Latin America since the 19th century, paying attention to the historical and cultural landmarks of this period. Students analyze different literary movements in America (e.g. romanticism, modernism, realism, naturalism, criollismo, surrealism, magic realism, the Latin American boom) and the most influential short stories and authors of the period, such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Gabriel García Marquez, and Maria Vargas Llosa, among others. Este curso muestra una visión integral del genero del cuento en España e Hispanoamérica desde el siglo XIX, prestando atención al los hitos históricos y culturales de la época. Los estudiantes analizarán diversos movimientos literarios en América (e.g., el romanticismo, el modernismo, el realismo, el naturalismo, el criollismo, el surrealismo, el realismo mágico, el boom latinoamericano) y los cuentos y autores más influyentes de la época, entre otros, Jorge Luís Borges, Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez y Mario Vargas Llosa. SPA480.50 History of Chilean Photography

The course aims to integrate historical analysis with digital and analog photography. Contents are developed diachronically, examining the principal historical milestones of photography in Chile, its evolution over time,  and the analysis of its visual and aesthetic clues.

Upon successful completion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Describe  a diachronic vision of Chilean photographic tradition, its main exponents, and its principal creative propositions,
  • Recognize and express systems, topics, and rhetorical strategies that integrate the visual specifics of historical Chilean photography
  • Understand and enumerate the particularities that shape a visual identity through diverse photographic genres
  • Describe how the process of photographic expansion is a phenomenon of aesthetic consumption renewing the cultural symbolic universe of Chile.

The course studies the historical and cultural background that led to the emergency of the crime-fiction genre. The course includes writings by the main representatives of the detective fiction whodunit novel and black comedy, such as Poe, Doyle, Chestertone, Christie, Hammet, Chandler, Simenon, and Highsmith. The course includes the study of the main representatives of the crime fiction genre in Europe and Latin America, such as Robbe-Grillet, Durrenmatt, Bernhard, Borges, Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Piglia, Soriano, Diaz Eterovic, Ampuero, Gomez, Serrano and Rojas. El curso estudia el trasfondo histórico y cultural que dio lugar a la aparición del género del crimen ficción. SPA480.48 Chilean Literature: Migrant Voices (Literatura chilena: voces migratorias)

This course analyzes the accounts of (im)migrant voices in Chilean literature. The course includes texts of Arabic, Jewish, and Croatian immigrants, as well as the work of exiled people and/or travelers. Students read tales of immigrants (e.g. Walter Garib, Sonia Guralnik, Nicolas Mihovilovic and Jorge Sherman, referred to family, ethnic, linguistic, and religious memories of diverse cultural groups), tales from exile (e.g. Antonio Skarmeta and Leandro Urbina); tales of adventurers (e.g. Isabel Allende); tales of drifters (e.g. Roberto Bolaños); and tales of indigenous nations (e.g. the voice of the mapuches in Sonia Montecino). El curso analiza los relatos de las voces de emigrantes en la literatura chilena. El curso incluye textos de inmigrantes árabes, judíos y cróatas, y asimismo la obra de gentes exiliadas y/o viajeros. SPA480.47 Chilean and Iberoamerican Essays (Ensayos chilenos e iberoamericanos)

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester.  The course examines the main subjects and cultural models proposed by Jose Martí (1853-1895), Pedro Henríquez Ureña (1884-1946), Alfonso Reyes (1889-1959), Octavio Paz (1914-1998), and Luis Oyarzún (1920-1972) that created a cultural tradition in Hispanic America capable of giving a singular identity to the continent. SPA480.46 Discourse and Poverty (Discurso y pobreza)

The intention of this course is to explore the relationship between language and social practices, particularly, the relationship between poverty in Chile and its discursive representation in texts. The course follows a theoretical-methodological perspective of the critical analysis of speech. Student will use tools of linguistic analysis that will allow a systematic and rigorous approach to studied texts. La intención de este curso es explorar la relación entre el lenguaje y las prácticas sociales, particularmente, la relación entre la pobreza en Chile y su representación discursiva en los textos. El curso sigue una perspectiva teórico-metodológica del análisis crítico del habla. Los estudiantes usarán instrumentos del análisis lingüístico, los cuales permitirán un enfoque sistemático y riguroso de los textos estudiados. SPA480.45 Chilean Spanish (El español de Chile)

This course studies synchronically and diachronically the Spanish from Chile, at a phonetic, phonologic, lexical, morphologic and syntactic levels. The course has an interdisciplinary approach that combines the dialectology, sociolinguistic, and history of the language. Topics include: History of Spanish in Chile, Synchronic Description of Chilean Spanish, Chilean Linguistic Tradition, and Discursive Practices in Chile. Este curso estudia el español de Chile sincrónica y diacrónicamente en términos de la fonética, la fonología, el léxico, la morfología y la sintaxis. El curso usa un enfoque interdisciplinario que combina la dialectología, la sociolingüística, y la historia de la lengua. Los temas incluyen: la historia del español en Chile, la descripción sincrónica del español chileno, la tradición lingüística chilena y las practicas discusivas chilenas.
