SPA480.69 Navigating José Donoso’s Work

This course gives students the opportunity to learn in detail and evaluate in depth the work of a Chilean writer who was one of the main practitioners of the twentieth-century Latin American narrative. The course will go through Europe’s most innovative and influential playwrights in the recent years (Bernard-Marie Koltès, Howard Barker, Martin Crimp, Heiner Müller, etc.) and will focus on analyzing the main characteristics of their works to put into perspective the development of contemporary European drama and its influence on the national theater environment. Through the reading of texts and the delivery of the basic tools for the analysis of drama, group discussion will be encouraged to awaken in students a new appreciation for the dramatic text and theatrical art.

An overview of the process of emancipation of the nations of Latin America in the early nineteenth century, the difficult construction of a republican order, opening the global economy and changes and continuities in society. This course is an overview of the two regimes of government that led the country between 1891 and 1973 (parliamentary and presidential), analyzing their characteristics in order to clarify their differences from the models that inspire them. At the same time, we will study the different factors that caused the final breakdown of these regimes, looking at length at the party system that existed in each regime and the influence they had on their respective crises. This course delves deeper into Cervantes’ novel, Don Quijote de la Mancha, as well as the circumstances of Cervantes’ life. Students conduct a careful reading of Don Quijote and analyze certain segments of the work to better understand the true importance of this novel. (UC code: LET231E)

In this course students apply theoretical tools to the analysis of a selected group of Chilean economic problems. Through this process we intend to strengthen the students’  understanding of the theory of economics and show the way in which it is applied to the analysis of concrete Chilean economic problems.
