Engaging in the study of the social, political, and economic transformations that occurred during the Realm of Chile in the 18th Century, this course will look at imperial context, colonial crisis, independence, and consolidation of an oligarchic order.

SPA480.19 Chilean Art 2 (ATH002 Arte Chileno II)

La síntesis del arte aborigen y el europeo, llamado Arte Colonial, concita el interés de académicos y críticos como una manifestación artística nacional en continua evolución. El objetivo central del curso es lograr un conocimiento cabal de las expresiones artísticas locales en el ámbito de la pintura, escultura, artesanía y arquitectura en su desarrollo cronológico y estilístico. The synthesis of aboriginal and European art, called Colonial Art, merits the interest of scholars and critics as a continuously developing national art form. The main objective of this course is to achieve complete knowledge of painting, sculpture, artisan work, and architectue, and their chronological and stylistic development in Chile.

El objetivo del curso es entregar a los alumnos un conocimiento cabal de las expresiones pictóricas, escultóricas, y arquitectónicas manifestadas en el ámbito local en el devenir histórico chileno. Al término del curso los alumnos deberán haber desarrollado un sentido crítico para analizar las diversas manifestaciones plásticas. The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the pictorial, sculptural and architectural expressions manifested in the historical development of Chile. Students will develop their critical skills and be able to analyze diverse artistic manifestations.

SPA480.17 Introduction to International Relations (Introducción a las Relaciones Internacionales)

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be available every semester. This course is an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with relevant themes and players in international tasks. To better facilitate the study of principal actors, interests and themes of international relations, the class is organized around the history and tasks of the United Nations and its related organizations. Students will review classic themes, including military conflicts between nations and various sources of power. It also explores the contemporary discipline of development, such as international economic relations and the global protection of the environment. (ICP 0301)

SPA480.15 Contemporary Hispano-American Literature

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. The development of Hispano-American literature during the contemporary period, from its beginnings in the early decades of the 20th century to the present. We study a significant number of representative works in the genres of narrative, poetry and essay, with an emphasis on the decades of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

SPA480.11 History of Chilean Theater (ATT001 Historía del Teatro Chileno)

Asignatura teórica destinada a interesar al alumno en el conocimiento de los diversos elementos constituyentes del teatro chileno y su relación directa con los movimientos sociales y políticos del siglo XX. Ofrece una visión global de algunos dramaturgos y movimientos escénicos nacionales, a partir del nacimiento de los teatros universitarios. This theoretical course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of Chilean theater and its direct relationship with social and political movements of the second half of the 20th century. It offers a global vision of some dramatists and national stage movements. Students will learn representative works of the period and study the evolution of the Chilean theater, from the birth of university theaters through its critical eras.

SPA480.10 Modern Chilean Literature (FH4727017 Literatura Chilena Moderna)

El curso presenta una revisión histórica de la literatura chilena moderna desde inicios del siglo XIX hasta la segunda década del siglo XX. A través del análisis de obras seminales y periodos estilísticos, los estudiantes comprenderán la literatura moderna de Chile y su relación con la literatura Hispanoamericana desde una perspectiva historicista.

This course presents a historical review of modern Chilean literature from the beginning of the 19th century until the second decade of the 20th century. Through the study of seminal novels and stylistic periods, students will be able to understand modern Chilean literature and its relationship with Latin American literature from a historical perspective.

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course is designed for students to understand the historical processes that produced the crisis of traditional values to which the avant-garde phenomenon respond. The irruption and consolidation of the vanguards in art and literature will be both shown and read. (LET 221E)

SPA380.7 Popular Music In Latin America – Musica Popular en America Latina

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course encourages the study and appreciation of Latin American popular music of the twentieth century considering both its aesthetic value and its historical and social relevance. It focuses on the major genres of this music and its most representative musicians; the role of cultural industries in the development of popular music; and historical, social and cultural processes underlying this development. SPA380.6 Social Work and Family (Trabajo Social y Familia)

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica. The purpose of the course is to contribute to the development of a broad and integrated perspective analysis that includes different scopes and family needs. With emphasis on understanding theoretical approaches, family evaluation and intervention techniques, it lets students develop connections of the different elements that make up working with families from a perspective of the family’s strengths and respect for the family construction.
