This course covers a number of salient topics in international economics, including international commerce, trade agreements, economic growth, globalization and the world economy.

ECN380.7 Economic Geography

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course will help students to understand the spatial aspects of productive activity and how economic events are related to the intervention of men as transforming agents and to geographic spaces which may facilitate or impede the developments of human activity. In this course students apply theoretical tools to the analysis of a selected group of Chilean economic problems. ECN380.6 Economics and Philosophy

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. The objective of the course is to expound on the basic notions of epistemological economics of the twentieth century and to apply the theory of epistemology to the particular case of the economy. Additionally, given the use and evaluation of primary source material, the course is designed to develop the aptitudes of written and oral expression of the students. In the long-term of the semester, we will discuss the forms in which it is possible to talk of a “science of economics.” Also, we will study themes of epistemology and economics, such as the predictability of game theory or the scientific statute of economic experiments. Finally, we will analyze themes like the role of rhetoric and ethics in economics. (UC code: EAE231A-1)

ECN380.5 History of Economic Thought

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. The course is designed as an introduction to the principal authors and schools of economic thought, starting with the first Greek thinkers and ending with some economists selected from the 20th century. A special emphasis will be placed on situating each author in the context from which emanates their work and the form in which each author links their economic thought with the rest of his or her speculation about man and human society. In that respect, each author’s ethical, philosophical, historical, etc. thoughts will be covered. At the end of the course, the student will have an adequate vision to understand the problems that gave birth to economic theory, which will allow the student to tackle the challenges that face economics and economy in the present day. ECN380.4 Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

Taught in English at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica. This course provides a survey from the perspective of economics of public policy issues regarding the use of natural resources and the management of environomental quality. The first part of the course is an introduction to the principles of environmental and resource economics. The focus then turns to both nonrenewable and renewable natural resources and environmental policy, including local, regional and global problems. The course concludes with a look at sustainability and macroeconomic aspects of environmental policy, including positive political economy. Pre-requisite: introductory economics course. ECN380.3 International Economics

Course objectives include recognizing, explaining and analyzing key pure theory variables of international economics and the effects of different policies in addition to the fundamentals of monetary theory in the international economy and the effects of different policies. ECN380.2 Economy and Public Politics I

Estudio de los principales problemas microeconómicos que afectan a los países latinoamericanos. Se incluyen temas como la economía del sector publico, los bienes públicos, las externalidades, la economía del trabajo, la competencia monopolística, la interacción estratégica, la discriminación de precios y la economía de la información. This course covers major microeconomic problems that affect Latin American countries. It includes topics such as the economics of the public sector, public goods and externalities, labor economics, monopolistic competition, strategic interaction, price discrimination, and information economics. ECN380.14 Environmental Economics & Sustainable Development

Taught in English at the Universidad de Chile and may not be available every semester. The main objective of this course is to analyze the economic and institutional causes of environmental problems. The course starts by introducing the field and its policy challenges, and by analyzing the question of “why do people pollute or overuse natural resources?” The course then turns towards the design and assessment of environmental regulation and policy. The analytical foundations of market failure and externalities, as well as the role of property rights, are at the core of the first part, together with the economic theory of environmental policy. The second part of the course discusses concepts of sustainability as approached from economics, and it provides an overview of the means by which sustainability may be evaluated. (ENECO 487)

ECN380.13 International Finances

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be available every semester. The objective of this course is to revisit the basic fundaments of macroeconomics in open economies in order to understand the recent phenomena in global economy. The causes of international crisis will be studied, and the channels of amplification and transmission. Alternatives of macroeconomic and financial policies that may help to gain financial stability will be formulated. (ENECO 480)
