The Academic Internship Program in Florence is a wonderful addition to any student’s abroad experience. With over 50 host institutions, students at every language level can apply classroom learning to an actual work situation, build their resumes, explore career options, and develop professional skills while earning academic credit.

Host Institutions

Syracuse Florence works with a variety of host organizations. The list is ever-expanding, and includes placements in fields such as architecture, classics, communications, drama, education, English & textual studies, film, history, art history, Italian language, literature, management, nutrition, political science, sports, photography, fashion design, and graphic design. There are opportunities for students at every level of Italian language proficiency.

Please remember however, that no specific placement with a given institution can be guaranteed. Students are placed where they can participate in projects where they can make themselves useful. Not all of the host institutions who accept interns have suitable projects or available office space at all times; however, there is always a wide range of internship positions for which to apply. Learn more on the Syracuse Florence website.

Credit

You will receive 1-3 credits depending on the total hours of placement, under the departmental credit BPS.

Some colleges do not accept internship credits at all. Check in advance with your home campus academic advisor if you are unsure.

Three-credit internships are available during the fall and spring semesters (45 hours of work per academic credit earned for a maximum of three credits = 135 hours of internship commitment).

Please note:  All interns will meet in a class (BPS400 The Global Workplace: Intercultural Communication and Change) setting once a week and be required to complete an asynchronous 4-hour work safety training before arrival in Italy.

Presence in the workplace can be organized over twelve weeks (usually two or three mornings a week), or over six weeks (usually five mornings a week for six weeks). The intern will also be assigned selected readings, writing assignments and reports by the faculty supervisor, and will have regular meetings with the site supervisor, in class the faculty supervisor, and the internship liaison.

Important: All Syracuse Florence internships must be approved for credit by an academic department on the Syracuse home campus. Internships cannot be approved for credit in a specific area. All internships are submitted for BPS credit approval. If you have any doubts about what kind of credit your university will accept, please check with your home campus administrator immediately.
