Developing New Courses and Programs Abroad

In order to encourage and enable all undergraduate students to study abroad, Syracuse University faculty and administrators are encouraged to develop new curricular pathways and opportunities that take advantage of off-campus locations and resources.

The following steps provide guidance and resources for developing proposals that are most likely to be successful.  Priority will be given to courses/programs that best enable more students to go abroad, that leverage the local context, and that align with school/college curricular goals for study abroad/away.

Planning New Programs and Courses Abroad

Step 1: Identify Opportunities and Audiences

Step 2: Submit Interest Form to Study Abroad Liaison

Step 3: Meet with Syracuse Abroad

Step 4: Submit Formal Proposal to Academic Affairs Committee

Note: If you are seeking to renew a faculty-led program that was approved in the past, please submit a renewal request.

Deadlines

Interest Forms will be reviewed on a rolling basis. It is recommended that Interest Forms be submitted to your school/college Study Abroad Liaison at least 3 months prior to your targeted formal proposal deadline (i.e.,September/October for January proposals and February/March for June proposals).

Formal proposals will be accepted two times per year, with the following submission deadlines:

  • January 20
  • June 20

Faculty-led program renewal requests: January 20 for programs intended to run the following year (e.g., if you are interested in running your program the summer of 2026, you need to submit your renewal by January 20, 2025).

Please note: Faculty cannot be on leave or off campus the academic year leading up to their summer course.
