Congratulations are going out to seven SU Abroad students who received Gilman Scholarships for their abroad programs this fall! The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. We encourage all SU Abroad students who meet the qualifications to apply for awards that can reach up to $8,000!

The next deadline (for spring 2017 programs) is October 4, 2016.

Syracuse University, both here on the main campus and at our international learning centers, sends its thoughts and prayers to the victims and all those impacted by yesterday’s tragic attack in Nice, France.

SU Abroad, in partnership with its overseas directors and partners, have confirmed the location, safety and well-being of all University students, faculty and staff traveling in France and in neighboring countries in Europe on SU Abroad programs.

It’s important to note that SU Abroad summer sessions in Madrid, Florence, and Strasbourg have all concluded for the summer. We do, however, have some faculty-led programs still underway in Paris, Geneva, Bologna, and Brussels, and have confirmed that all students and staff are safe and accounted for.

SU Abroad monitors travel conditions daily and is constantly reviewing State Department and International SOS travel guidance.

Faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and thoughtful about their own personal safety, to plan their itinerary with safety in mind, and to refer to the US State Department and ISOS for security updates.

Heads-up for all of our students going to Europe this fall! The Cultural Bridge Scholarship is a $500 scholarship for study abroad. The deadline to apply is August 1.

Requirements: You must be a US citizen, an undergrad, with a 3.0 minimum GPA, and must be going to Europe.

Sue Shane, SU Abroad Director of Programs, has been named the 2015 Central New York International Educator of the Year. She was honored at the 7th annual CNY International Citizen Awards dinner held November 13th. The awards dinner was the kickoff event for the celebration of Central New York International Education Week, which emphasizes the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Also honored at the ceremony was Syracuse University student Trang Dang, who was presented with the International Student Leadership Award.

The International Educator award is part of International Center of Syracuse annual awards.

This week, SU Santiago Director Dr. Mauricio Paredes will be on campus to talk to students, meet with faculty and staff members, and give a lecture in Spanish to the University community about the enduring legacy of Chile’s military dictatorship.

Beginning in Spring 2016, the Syracuse University Strasbourg Center will offer a new course cluster with a focus on social work and human development in the region. This new program will cater to SU and visiting students majoring in social work, child and family studies, or other human development programs.

Now Offered at the SU Florence Center

Syracuse University Abroad’s Florence Center now offers a cluster of courses in sustainability studies.

Students studying at SU Florence will have the opportunity to learn about the challenges of sustainability through a European perspective. Courses highlight ecological thought, historical and current understanding around the world about sustainability in the global business context, and the study of environmental issues.

Introducing a Re-entry Seminar for Abroad Students

The School of Education at Syracuse University will debut a one-credit seminar for returning study abroad students in fall 2015.

The course, EDU 300: Special Topics – Critical Reflection on Study Abroad will be held once a week and is designed to help students reflect on their experiences abroad. The first of its kind to be offered in the School of Education, this “re-entry program” will encourage students to think critically about their abroad experiences and apply their abroad experiences to their academic, professional, and personal lives at home.

12 SU Abroad Students Receive Funding

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the Gilman scholarship program awards up to $5,000 for a semester of study.  An additional $3,000 can be awarded to students studying a “critical language” abroad, such as Mandarin Chinese or Turkish (Syracuse University has centers in Beijing, China and Istanbul, Turkey.)
