GEO380.7 Hydrology and Water Resources Assessment (Hidrologia y Evaluacion de Recursos Hidricos)

GEO380.7 Hydrology and Water Resources Assessment (Hidrologia y Evaluacion de Recursos Hidricos)

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica. The course provides general knowledge of the hydrosphere as part of the geographical landscape. Delivers analysis of the variables and parameters of the Global Hydrological Cycle within the concept of Continental Hydrology. Deliver the right tools and techniques in the field of hydrological studies preferably focused on geographical research. Pre-Req: Climatology. (UC code: GEO 2014)

BIO380.5 Intro to Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing field that integrates molecular biology, statistics, and computer science. This course is devoted to the mathematical models and computer algorithms of DNA and protein sequence analysis. In this course, students will learn many of the popular tools for performing bioinformatics analysis and will be introduced to the thinking that drives these algorithms. Various existing bioinformatics methods will be critically described and the strengths and limitations of each will be discussed. (GEN 2008)

GEO380.4 Urban Development

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course analyzes the most significant elements of urban systems, in order to provide an explanatory framework to understand the processes that occur within cities and which make up the urban development of the contemporary city. Specifically, the analysis includes basic concepts of urban economics and location theory, after which focus is placed on delving into the current dynamics of problems faced by cities and possible solutions. (UC code: GEO2016)

GEO380.19 The Asian World and Latin America

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course introduces students to the analysis of the Asian region and its relations with Latin America, in particular with Chile. It offers spatial, political, and cultural perspectives on the Asian-Pacific region and Latin America. Students analyze the integration of both regions into the global development process and the comparative advantages that stem from their geographical locations. The course includes the study of Asian political systems (e.g. actors, decision making process, and policies.) (GEO 2904)

This course may also be registered as SPA 480.42.

GEO380.18 Intro. to the Study of the Relationship Between Poverty, Social Exclusion & Sustainable Development

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course studies poverty as a socio-spatial phenomenon and its relation to issues such as social exclusion and sustainable development. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are used to study the topic at hand from a contemporary and interdisciplinary point of view, integrating social exclusion, segregation, vulnerability, inequality, welfare and human capital. (GEO 2915)

GEO380.17 Economic Geography

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. This course starts by making an introduction to the issues, approaches and methodologies used in economic geography, then reviews in more detail some of the most important issues, mainly from the perspective of political economy, but realizing the differences with other possible approaches. Among the topics studied include Globalization and its Impact on Economic Activity, Uneven Economic Development and its Causes, and The Importance of Location to Define Economic Activities.

BIO380.4 Clinical Genetics and Genetic Counseling

In this course students explore the genetic causes of congenital and acquired disorders to gain insight in the possibilities of genetic diagnostics (pre-implantation, prenatal, postnatal) and genetic counseling. Students also discuss the ethics of genetic counseling and genetic tests. (GEN 4052)

GEO380.16 Geo-demographics

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course introduces the student to the concepts and language of geodemographics in order to understand the phenomena of population distribution and concentration due to socioeconomic and cultural processes. We discuss the consequences of great demographics problems, such as the evolution of demographics, social and economic imbalances, and migrations. The course also provides knowledge and exercise of key demographic indicators, analysis sources and representation through graphs and thematic maps. (UC code: GEO 2003)

BIO380.3 Microbiology

The course will introduce the students to the biology of microorganisms with emphasis on prokaryotes. It covers structure, metabolism, genetics, growth and pathogenicity of bacteria. (GEN 3051)

GEO380.15 Rural Geography

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. The course focuses on the analysis and explanation of rural landscapes as a result of natural, cultural, historical and economic elements and factors that account for their operation and structure. We will study and analyze the restructuring of rural areas as a result of globalization and the impact generated by social and economic problems in land use. (UC code: GEO 2011)
