This course introduces students to the analysis of the Asian region and its relations with Latin America, in particular with Chile. It offers spatial, political, and cultural perspectives on the Asian-Pacific region and Latin America. Students analyze the integration of both regions into the global development process and the comparative advantages that stem from their geographical locations. This course starts by making an introduction to the issues, approaches and methodologies used in economic geography, then reviews in more detail some of the most important issues, mainly from the perspective of political economy, but realizing the differences with other possible approaches. Among the topics studied include Globalization and its Impact on Economic Activity, Uneven Economic Development and its Causes, and The Importance of Location to Define Economic Activities.
GEO380.16 Geo-demographics
Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course introduces the student to the concepts and language of geodemographics in order to understand the phenomena of population distribution and concentration due to socioeconomic and cultural processes. We discuss the consequences of great demographics problems, such as the evolution of demographics, social and economic imbalances, and migrations.
