ECN380.12 Economic History of Contemporary Chile

Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be offered every semester. This course discusses the long-term process of economic development in Chile since the beginning of the republic, distinguishing the specificity and distinctive contribution to learning that the country has been making in economic matters. Secondly, it aims to achieve an eclectic vision of each of these cycles of growth, with different approaches and comparing their results with the global economic performance and the region. To achieve this, the class uses economic data that was established at the beginning of the Chilean statistic era. This data is examined using applicable economic instruments and prevailing doctrines in each cycle. Finally, the course aims that students perceive in each set of policies applied at the macro and sector levels certain institutional arrangements, the role of underlying external and ideological influences, with their productive emphasis and the social and political consequences. Taught in Spanish at the Universidad de Chile and may not be available every semester.  Review of the development of the economies of Argentina, Mexico and Chile from the time of colonization to the present day. This course looks at these nations’ economic policies and strategies, from a public policy perspective, considering their successes and failures and the pending challenges in the 21st century.

Taught in Spanish at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica and may not be offered every semester. This course analyzes the different components of aggregate expenditure (consumption, investment, public spending and external sector) and aggregate balance. We study the unemployment and labor market performance. Each topic covers both traditional theories and more recent contributions also giving emphasis to empirical evidence and to economic policy conclusions to be drawn. The course objective is that students develop analytical capacity to interpret the data regarding the long-run growth of economies and the behavior of economic aggregates.

Pre-requisite: Intro to Macroeconomics course

This course is taught in Spanish at a Chilean university and may not be offered every semester. The aim of this advanced course is to apply basic theories to the analysis of major economic problems in Chile. These are:

1. Macroeconomic problems,
2. Growth and productivity problems, and
3. Income distribution and social problems.

This course encourages debate and critical thinking rather than the mere application of economic theories, shifting the focus away from identifying problems to actively looking for solutions.

Curso avanzado cuyo objetivo es la aplicación de teorías aprendidas con anterioridad en el análisis de los principales problemas económicos de Chile:

1. Problemas macroeconómicos,
2. Problemas de crecimiento y productividad, y
3. Distribución del ingreso y problemas sociales.

El curso esta dirigido a incentivar el debate, análisis critico y la búsqueda de soluciones en lugar de una mera identificación de problemas.
